Wiener Philharmoniker & Erich Leinsdorf

Leinsdorf's Ariande auf Naxos is one of the great recordings of the work. The singers are among the finest of the 1950s-1960s, and the Decca transfer is far superior to the RCA vinyl incarnation. Rysanek's huge voice still occasionally overwhelms the microphones, particularly in the closing scene, but she is thrilling to hear. Jurinac, along with Seefried, is one of the great interpreters of the Composer. I once considered Jan Peerce a weak link in the cast, but on hearing him again after several years, I have changed my mind; he is wonderful! Leinsdorf's view of the score is much faster than Karajan, but in the end, he grasps you with his insight and deep love of the music. The Vienna Philharmonic is outstanding. --Amazon customer
