Enrique Granados, one of the triumverate of late 19th century Spanish classical composers (with Falla and Albeniz) has long been admired for his beautiful piano suite "Goyescas." Granados himself orchestrated this operatic adaptation, and Fernando Periquet added the libretto. The results are very much worth the effort, and I am at a loss to explain why it is so infreqently performed and recorded. The opera adds a new dimension to the enchanting melodies of the piano suite, with exuberant choruses, lovely duets, and an exquisitely beautiful "La Maja y el ruisenor" aria by the pure-voiced soprano Maria Bayo that never ceases to give me goosebumps. Granado's studies in Paris are evident in the melodies and lush orchestration, reminiscent of Debussy and Ravel at their finest. The recording quality is excellent, with masterful performances by the cast and the Madrid Symphony Orchestra conducted by Antoni Ros Marba --Amazon customer
