Fifty years ago the young soprano Joan Sutherland made one of the most sensational debuts in the history of opera at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. There she triumphed in the title role of Lucia in Donizetti's masterpiece Lucia di Lammermoor. Sutherland sang Lucia hundreds of times around the world and it became one of her signature roles. If memory serves me she was dubbed La Stupenda after singing Handel’s Alcina at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice. Sutherland is sometimes described as the “High Priestess of Bel Canto”. I recall tenor Luciano Pavarotti, who frequently sang with Sutherland, labelling her the “Voice of the Century”. --Arkivmusic
