"The performances are excellent, the orchestra obviously revelling in a repertory normally closed to them. Tate is expert at distinguishing the very different worlds of five operas spanning Strauss's entire career, handling Intermezzo like chamber music, giving the brass their heads in the more robust hubbub of the Schweigsame Frau 'pot-pourri', as Strauss called it, summoning the utmost splendour for the Frau ohne Schatten finale.
