"Les Troyens" is so full of delights that in each performance one discovers something new and wonderful . . . The whole cast is solid, right down to the drunken soldiers. Jessye Norman's Cassandre is forcefully, beautifully sung, and even gone mad, she moves about the stage with classical dignity. Tatiana Troyanos's throbbing ardors make Didon's agonies especially poignant, and this performance is one for her admirers to treasure especially . . . This was also James Levine's first experience conducting the score, and the rhythmic eccentricities and innumerable subtle touches bloom under his hand . . . those who own either may find advantage here, as the colors are ten times sharper and clearer than on my (aged) tape, and the instrumental playing sounds crisper, too.
