The great importance of lieder within Strauss' creative output can be seen from the sheer number of works he composed in the genre: 187 songs with piano, plus those with orchestra. Only after Strauss found his own operatic language, with 'Salome,' did song production take a back seat, but even then without losing significance. With the exception of the Heine setting, all the songs on the present CD date from the fertile period of composition of 1885-1900. Jonas Kaufmann studied with James King and won first prize in the Nuremberg Meistersinger Competition in 1993. Since 2001 he has been a member of the Zurich Opera.
Richard Strauss notoriously disliked tenors, once even going to far as to call them "a disease". You can't help feeling, however, that he might have changed his mind had he heard this tremendous disc, which features Jonas Kaufmann tackling 27 of his songs. Stupendous is the only word to describe it. This is sexy, passionate singing, delivered with thrilling ease.
Kaufmann's performances of such familiar numbers as Breit über mein Haut, Traum durch die Dämmerung and Befreit are particularly overwhelming, although his programme also contains rarities such as Ich liebe dich and Wozu noch Mädchen, which he does with comparable grace and intensity.
This album received the 2007 Gramophone magazine award for "Best Solo Volcal" recording.
