The vocal glory of the set remains Sena Jurinac's Octavian. Here in more refulgent voice perhaps than anywhere else on disc, perhaps, she gives the performance of one's dreams. How gleaming yet how warm is her voice, how naturally impetuous and intense her colloquies with her elders. Jurinac carefully denotes Octavian's growing fascination with Sophie. Then, as the maudlin Mariandl of Act 3, she changes her tone subtly, never exaggerating. Finally, her voice soars gloriously in the trio and duet that crown the work.
