Andreas Moll’s atmospheric souvenir of the 2006 Waldbühne concert was the perfect entertainment for a warm summer evening. It is the sort of event and program that does not call for an overly critical view despite the general excellence of the performances and top-notch recording. The engineers have been subtle about reminding the viewer that this is an outdoor concert: the noise of the crowd is limited—the stage is well isolated acoustically and even the front rows of the audience are not close to the stage. Nonetheless, you will still hear the occasional baby as well as concertgoers who, as tradition demands, join in with vigorous clapping for some of the encores.
Neeme Järvi and the Berliners are in typically fine form and the program is well chosen. It is a pleasure to hear one of the world’s great orchestras play a Mozart overture at full throttle. The Estonian maestro delivers a full-bodied, energized account of the popular overture that is never too heavy unless your tastes are strongly vegetarian. With Nielsen’s Aladdin, Järvi is on home turf and delivers a powerfully propulsive account of the March with rich strings punctuated by brilliant brass and sensuous, melismatic wind episodes.
