Yannick Nézet-Séguin

Young Nino Machaidze from Georgia burst onto the stage as a Juliet of sparkling eyes and tireless energy, who illuminated the balcony scene like a 200-watt bulb. In the vocal department she gave everything she had, which included . . . much bright tone and all the intensity she could musterm . . . Villazón evidently finds the role of Roméo congenial . . . There was much dreamy, soft singing and, wherever passion was called for, he gave body and soul. Singing from the heart is Villazón's trademark, and the ardour of his performance could have had Juliettes from half of Europe besieging the Felsenreitschule. There was a decent supporting cast . . . Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducted the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg with an urgncy that suggested he thought Gounod's opera really was a matter of life and death . . .
