Had Maria Callas lived in any other century, her voice, her demeanor, and her star quality would still be the stuff of legend. Luckily, we have more than folklore--we have these digitally remastered performances released on EMI Classics.
The title role in Vincenzo Bellini's 'Norma' requires extraordinary talents of a dramatic soprano. In 1954, Callas's voice was at its peak. Although critics considered her dramatic skills improved in 1960 when a second recording was made, it is this performance that shows her in her true glory.
The story of 'Norma' may have been lost if not for great sopranos like Callas. Talent rescued the opera from anonymity after an unspectacular premiere in 1831. In Callas's hands, the genius of Bellini is fully realized.
